No need to follow this exactly. The idea is to keep the main sights close together, choose lunch when we feel hungry, then head up to Kamado Shrine later in the day.

These are our core Dazaifu stops. Anything else can be added only if we still have time and energy.
Dazaifu Tenmangu stands on the burial site of Sugawara no Michizane, a Heian-period scholar and statesman who later came to be worshipped as Tenjin, the deity of learning, culture and the arts. A shrine was first built here in 905, with a larger sanctuary following in 919, and it later became the head shrine of Tenjin worship across Japan.
This lively approach connects Dazaifu Station with Tenmangu and has long served pilgrims and visitors heading to the shrine. Today it is lined with old sweet shops, souvenir stores, cafés and newer design-led spots, making it one of the nicest places to wander and snack along the way.
This branch opened in 2011 and was designed by architect Kengo Kuma. Its dramatic timber lattice uses thousands of wooden pieces to create a tunnel-like interior that blends a modern café with the traditional character of the Dazaifu approach.
Dazaifu's best-known traditional sweet is a grilled rice cake filled with sweet azuki bean paste and stamped with a plum-blossom design. It is closely associated with the story of Sugawara no Michizane, and shops along the approach have been making it for generations.
Set at the foot of sacred Mt. Homan, Kamado Shrine traces its origins to the 7th century and was historically associated with protection from misfortune and safe journeys. Today it is also especially known for matchmaking and its modern amulet office. Fans often connect it with Demon Slayer because of the shared “Kamado” name, although the shrine has no official franchise connection.

We are not coming to Dazaifu for a shopping spree, but the lanes around Tenmangu are actually good for retro ceramics, folk crafts, textiles and small local souvenirs. These are the ones most suited to us.
A tiny shop hidden down a side lane selling Showa-era old ceramics, a few overseas vintage goods and the owner's own handmade pieces such as wool-felt work, nail tips and miniature frames.
A proper folk-craft shop with traditional Fukuoka crafts and regional toys rather than generic souvenirs. It carries Koishiwara pottery, clay and papier-mâché figures, wooden toys and handmade fabric goods.
A small regional BEAMS JAPAN concept store working with Fukuoka makers. It mixes contemporary design with traditional materials, including Dazaifu-only collaborations.
An old-style souvenir stop at the entrance to the shrine approach, with a nicer mix than a standard tourist shop: artist-made pottery, Hakata dolls, Japanese miscellaneous goods and Dazaifu's lucky wooden bullfinch.
A dedicated Kurume kasuri shop right on the shrine approach. It carries Fukuoka's traditional indigo-patterned textile in both classic and more wearable modern forms.
The main approach itself has around 100 shops. We do not need to plan every one — this is where we can casually look for omamori-style goods, accessories, traditional Japanese items, character souvenirs and small gifts.
Shop and restaurant cards use photos from the named business or local tourism source where available. If a source temporarily blocks external display, the site automatically shows a local trip image instead of a broken picture.
Dazaifu is an easy day trip from our Hakozaki base, with convenient train connections into the main sightseeing area.
A practical option is to head towards Hakata and continue to Dazaifu, or travel towards Tenjin and connect onto the Nishitetsu network. Expect roughly around an hour depending on the connection.
Kamado Shrine is uphill from the central Dazaifu area, so we'll use the local community bus or take a taxi if that's easier for four people.
