Yanagawa grew around an extraordinary network of waterways. The canals, historic homes and local culture all make more sense once we see the town from the water first.
Yanagawa is woven together by roughly 930 km of waterways, originally developed for drainage, irrigation, defence and everyday life. Today the classic kawakudari journey lets us glide beneath low bridges in a flat-bottomed donkobune while a boatman poles the boat through the old canals — sometimes with songs and stories along the way.
Ohana preserves the former residence and garden of the Tachibana family, the feudal lords of Yanagawa. The estate combines the peaceful Shoto-en Garden with grand Japanese rooms, a Western-style building and family collections, giving us a glimpse of how the domain's ruling family lived across the feudal and modern eras.
This waterside neighbourhood is the atmospheric heart of sightseeing in Yanagawa. Traditional eel restaurants, small shops, former merchant buildings and narrow streets sit beside the canals, while many boat trips finish nearby. It is the part of town where we can simply wander without needing a strict route.
Kitahara Hakushu was one of modern Japan's best-known poets and was born in Yanagawa in 1885. His restored family home and memorial museum explain his childhood, poetry and deep attachment to the waterways of his hometown. Even if we do not spend long inside, it helps explain why his name and work appear throughout Yanagawa — including at HAKUSYU café.
The canals are not just a tourist attraction — they are part of the town's historic water-management system and identity. After the main sights, we can leave some unplanned time for willow-lined paths, small bridges, waterside views and whatever shops we happen to find.
Yanagawa is famous for unagi seiro-mushi, but we only need to choose one eel restaurant. The cafés and sweets can fit around the boat ride and sightseeing.
Why go: one of Yanagawa's most historic eel houses, tracing its seiro-mushi tradition to 1681. The eel is charcoal-grilled, laid over rice seasoned with the restaurant's secret sauce, then steamed together so the flavour runs through the whole box.

Yanagawa's shopping is small-scale and very local — exactly the kind we want. Around Okinohata we can look for handmade sagemon, folk crafts, locally designed goods and food souvenirs rather than chain-store shopping.
Right beside Kitahara Hakushu's birthplace, this little shop actually makes Yanagawa Mari and traditional Sagemon rather than simply reselling them. The colourful hanging decorations are one of Yanagawa's most distinctive traditions.
A century-old local business opposite the Hakushu birthplace. Beyond soy sauce, it sells unusual dressings and sauces made with Yanagawa ingredients, so this is a much more local edible souvenir than something from the airport.
A nostalgic little shop/café packed with Yanagawa goods. The owner designed the Suigou Yanagawa Handbook tenugui, illustrating 13 local motifs, and also stocks Ariake Sea nori and other regional products.
A handicraft store founded in the Meiji era. This is the one to browse if we become obsessed with Yanagawa's textile crafts — it carries finished Mari and Sagemon pieces as well as chirimen fabric and DIY kits.

Yanagawa is south of Fukuoka city. The useful part is that once we reach Nishitetsu Fukuoka (Tenjin), Yanagawa is roughly a 50-minute direct train ride with no transfer.
From our Airbnb, head towards central Fukuoka and Nishitetsu Fukuoka (Tenjin) Station. From there, take a Nishitetsu train south to Nishitetsu Yanagawa Station. The official Yanagawa tourism site lists the direct Tenjin–Yanagawa journey at about 50 minutes.
Several river-cruise operators have boarding points near the station or offer transfers, so we can choose the most convenient boat company closer to the day rather than locking one in now.
